Shaft Manufacturing FAQ

What materials are best for high-strength shafts?

4140 and 4340 steel are the industry standards for high-strength rotating shafts — excellent strength-to-weight, good machinability, and responsive to heat treatment. 1045 and 1050 carbon steel are used for lower-stress applications. 17-4 PH stainless is used for corrosive environments. Titanium is increasingly used in aerospace and high-performance applications for weight reduction. Material selection depends on load, speed, environment, and fatigue requirements.

What tolerances can you hold on shaft diameters?

Standard CNC shaft turning holds ±0.01mm on diameter. Precision shaft grinding can achieve ±0.005mm. For bearing fits, we routinely hold ISO h7 tolerances and tighter. Critical diameter specifications should be detailed on your drawing — we will advise on feasibility and grinding costs if ultra-tight tolerances are required.

Can you manufacture shafts with keyways and splines?

Yes. Keyways are broached or milled into standard shaft diameters. Splines (involute, Woodruff, and straight) are available with precision grinding for optimal fit and transmit power without slip. Spline designs and tooth counts are specified per DIN or ANSI standards.

What is the maximum length shaft you can manufacture?

Our CNC turning capacity extends to approximately 2 meters on standard machines. Longer shafts (2–4 meters) can be manufactured with secondary operations or on our long-bed turning centres. Discuss your length requirements during the quote phase — we will advise on manufacturing approach and any cost implications.

Can you manufacture hollow shafts?

Yes. Hollow shafts (tubular) reduce weight while maintaining strength. We can drill, bore, and finish hollow shafts to your specifications. Internal bores can be precision-finished for internal bearing installation or hydraulic circuit integration.

What is the typical lead time for custom shafts?

Standard CNC-turned shafts: 5–7 business days. Shafts requiring grinding, hardening, or balancing: 7–10 business days. Long shafts or complex designs: 10–14 business days. Urgent custom shafts: 2–3 business days available on request. Lead time varies based on material availability and complexity — discuss your timeline in your quote.
