Spindle FAQs
What materials are best for high-speed spindles?
Steel 4140 is the standard choice for high-speed spindles due to its good balance of strength and thermal stability. For extreme high-speed applications (>10,000 rpm), stainless steel 17-4 PH offers better thermal properties and corrosion resistance. Tool steel M2 or D2 is used for grinding spindles requiring hardness. Titanium is used for ultra-lightweight aerospace spindles. Specify your maximum RPM and we will recommend the optimal material.
Can you manufacture spindles with tapered bores?
Yes. We routinely machine taper bores (ISO 30, 40, 50, VDI, SMS, etc.) for direct mounting of collets and tool holders. Tapered bore concentricity and runout are held to ±0.005mm. Integral drawbars and pull-stud pockets are also machined. Specify your taper standard and pull-stud requirement on your drawing.
What tolerances can you hold on spindle runout?
Standard CNC spindle machining holds runout within 0.02–0.05mm (TIR). For precision spindles requiring tighter runout (0.005–0.01mm TIR), we use precision grinding and CMM verification. Bearing seat tolerances are held to ISO h7 or tighter. Specify your runout tolerance for the bore and OD separately, and we will achieve it.
What is the typical lead time for custom spindles?
Lead time for custom spindles is 7–14 business days depending on complexity and material. Simple spindle shafts: 7–10 days. Complex spindles with integral housings, drawbars, and precision bore work: 10–14 days. Expedited services available for critical applications. Request a quote with your required delivery date.
Can you balance spindles for high-speed operation?
Yes. We offer dynamic balancing of spindle shafts to ISO 1940 Grade G6.3 or tighter. Balancing is critical for spindles operating above 5,000 rpm to minimize vibration and wear. Balanced spindles are tagged with balance certificate showing residual unbalance in grams per millimetre. Request balancing on your quote.
Do you offer prototype spindle testing?
We manufacture spindles to specification. For design validation or prototype testing, consult our engineering team. We can recommend material upgrades, shaft diameter optimizations, or bearing preload adjustments based on your RPM and duty. Test methodology and acceptance criteria should be specified during design review.
