Surgical Instruments FAQ

What materials are best for surgical instruments?

316L stainless steel is the industry standard for surgical instruments due to its superior corrosion resistance, ease of sterilisation, and biocompatibility. Titanium Grade 2 and Ti-6Al-4V are used where lower weight is critical (orthopaedic instruments). PEEK is used for non-conductive instruments where electrosurgical compatibility is required. All materials can be supplied with material certifications for medical device compliance.

What tolerances can you hold on instrument pivots?

Surgical instruments require precision on pivot points and cutting edges. We routinely hold ±0.01mm on pivot diameters and ±0.05mm on overall dimensions. Sharper edges and special surface finishes (polishing, honing) can be arranged. CMM verification available for critical dimensions.

Can you manufacture instruments for sterile environments?

Yes. All surgical instrument components are machined to allow for effective sterilisation. 316L stainless steel is fully autoclavable to 134°C. We can specify surface finishes optimised for steam sterilisation. Parts can be supplied in individual packaging ready for sterile processing.

What is the typical lead time for surgical instruments?

Prototype or single surgical instruments typically require 5–10 business days from approved drawing. Higher quantities (10+) reduce per-unit cost by 30–60%. Emergency manufacturing available for urgent cases. Quotes include lead time estimates.

Do you offer passivation for stainless steel instruments?

Yes. Passivation per ASTM A967 is available for 316L stainless steel surgical instruments — this removes surface iron and improves corrosion resistance. Passivation is applied post-machining as part of our finishing service and is included in the supply quote.

Can you manufacture custom instrument designs?

Yes. We work with medical device designers and orthopaedic surgeons to prototype and manufacture custom instrument designs. Bring CAD, sketches, or samples — we can reverse engineer, refine, and produce instruments. Full design support available.
