CNC Machined Plates FAQ
What plate types can you manufacture?
We manufacture custom CNC machined plates including base plates (machine mounting), mounting plates (equipment fastening), fixture plates (tooling and jigs), wear plates (high-abrasion surfaces), shim plates (alignment and adjustment), cover plates (enclosures and protection), face plates (mounting surfaces), and custom profile plates (customer-specific geometry). All plates are custom made to your dimensions and tolerances.
What materials are best for high-strength plates?
Steel 4140 is our most common high-strength plate material — tensile strength 655 MPa, excellent machinability, suitable for heavy-duty structural and machinery applications. Stainless steel 316 offers superior corrosion resistance with good strength (517 MPa tensile) — ideal for marine and chemical environments. Stainless steel 304 is a cost-effective general-purpose stainless. For maximum strength-to-weight ratio, consider aluminium 7075-T6 (572 MPa). Titanium is available for aerospace and extreme-temperature applications.
What tolerances can you hold on plate thickness?
Standard CNC machining on plates achieves ±0.05mm on thickness dimensions. Precision machining with coordinate measurement verification can hold ±0.01mm. For critical applications requiring tighter control, we recommend surface grinding after machining to achieve ±0.005mm or better. Flatness of machined plates is typically better than ±0.05mm per 100mm — tighter flatness is available with additional grinding.
What is the typical lead time for custom plates?
Quote turn-around is 2 business days. Once order is confirmed, lead times depend on part complexity and current shop load. Simple plates typically deliver in 3–5 business days. Complex multi-feature plates may require 5–10 business days. Surface finishing (grinding, polishing) adds 2–5 business days. Rush lead times are available — contact our engineering team for expedited scheduling.
Can you manufacture plates with complex hole patterns?
Yes. CNC drilling and milling is ideal for plates with complex hole patterns — bolt holes, dowel holes, tooling holes, and irregular arrays. We can produce holes on a coordinate grid or random pattern to your exact specifications. Through-holes, counterbores, counterbores with taps, and irregular shapes are all standard. Hole diameters range from 0.5mm (precision drilling) to over 100mm (holesaw or boring). Tolerances as tight as ±0.05mm are achievable.
Do you offer surface grinding for flatness?
Yes. We offer CNC surface grinding for precision flat plates — common on fixture plates, precision bases, and machine beds where flatness is critical. Surface grinding achieves Ra 0.8µm finish and flatness within ±0.01mm per 100mm or better. Surface grinding is typically quoted separately from machining. For most applications, CNC face milling provides adequate flatness at lower cost.
