PTFE Parts FAQ
What is PTFE and why use it for precision parts?
PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene / Teflon) is a high-performance fluoropolymer with exceptional chemical resistance, low friction, and high temperature tolerance (up to 260°C continuous). PTFE is inherently non-stick, self-lubricating, and resistant to virtually all chemicals, making it ideal for seals, bearings, liners, and components in harsh chemical or high-temperature environments.
What are the advantages of PTFE over metals?
PTFE offers significant advantages: extreme chemical resistance (resists all acids, bases, solvents, and aggressive chemicals), low friction coefficient (self-lubricating, eliminates lubrication maintenance), high temperature capability (260°C continuous, 315°C brief exposure), non-corrosive in all environments, non-reactive with process chemicals, lightweight, and easy machining. PTFE eliminates corrosion failures in chemical systems.
What tolerances can you hold on PTFE parts?
PTFE machines well but has different tolerance characteristics than metals. Standard CNC machining achieves ±0.1mm on general features. High-precision PTFE machining achieves ±0.05mm. PTFE has thermal expansion characteristics and some creep under load — consult our engineers for tight-tolerance critical dimensions.
What grades of PTFE do you work with?
We supply virgin (unfilled) PTFE, glass-filled PTFE (improved stiffness), carbon-filled PTFE (improved wear resistance), and bronze-filled PTFE (enhanced lubricity and strength). Each grade offers different properties for specific applications. Specify your application requirements and we will recommend the optimal grade.
What is the typical lead time for PTFE parts?
Single-off PTFE parts typically require 2–3 weeks from quote approval to delivery. Stock material is available in rod, tube, and sheet. Production runs may allow reduced per-unit cost. Expedited jobs can be arranged — contact our engineers for fast-track options.
Can you manufacture PTFE parts for high-temperature applications?
Yes. PTFE is rated for continuous operation at 260°C and brief exposure to 315°C. It retains mechanical properties at temperature and does not degrade in hot chemical environments. PTFE is the material of choice for high-temperature chemical processing equipment. Specify your temperature range and we will confirm suitability.
