What materials are best for high-precision rods?
Steel 4140 and 4340 are the standard choices for high-precision rods — excellent machinability and grindability. Stainless steel 316 offers corrosion resistance with good precision. 17-4 PH stainless provides exceptional hardness for wear-critical piston rods. Titanium is ideal for lightweight, high-strength applications. Aluminium 6061-T6 is excellent for non-ferrous precision rods. Each material has different grinding and plating characteristics — consult our team for complex finishes.
What tolerances can you hold on rod straightness?
Standard CNC turned rods achieve straightness within ±0.05mm per 100mm. Precision grinding achieves ±0.01mm per 100mm or better. Ultra-precision rods with hard chrome plating and final honing can achieve ±0.005mm per 100mm and TIR <0.002mm. Straightness control is critical for piston rods and hydraulic cylinders — specify your requirement and we will confirm capability.
What is the typical lead time for custom rods?
Quote turnaround is 2 business days. Once order is confirmed, lead times depend on rod complexity, finish requirements, and current shop load. Simple turned rods typically deliver in 3–5 business days. Precision ground rods may require 5–10 business days. Hard chrome plating and final honing adds 5–10 business days. Can you manufacture rods with custom surface finishes?
Yes. Custom surface finishes are a core part of our rod manufacturing capability. Options include hard chrome plating (wear and corrosion resistance), electroless nickel plating, electropolishing (smooth, corrosion-resistant finish), polishing (decorative), and precision grinding (Ra 0.4µm or better). Specify your finish requirement and we will include it in the quote.
Do you offer hard chrome plating for rods?
Yes. Hard chrome plating is available on all steel and stainless rods. Chrome coating is typically 0.05–0.2mm thick depending on the application. Plated rods are then honed or polished to final dimensions. Hard chrome provides exceptional wear and corrosion resistance — standard for hydraulic piston rods and high-speed shafts. We manage the plating and finishing as part of our supply service.
