Insert FAQs
What insert types can you manufacture?
We manufacture all standard insert types: threaded inserts (Helicoil-style helical, straight wall), press-fit inserts (with or without shoulder), heat-set inserts (molded into plastic), ultrasonic inserts (for plastic assembly), key-locking inserts (with longitudinal key), self-tapping inserts (with cutting flutes), solid bushing inserts (bearing-style), and custom profile inserts. Specify the insert type and host material (metal, plastic, composite).
What materials are best for high-torque inserts?
Stainless steel 303 (free-cutting) is the standard for high-torque inserts due to excellent machinability and thread strength. Stainless steel 316 is used in corrosive environments. Brass is selected for low-torque or decorative applications. Titanium is used for aerospace weight-critical applications. For plastic-molded inserts, brass is most common. Specify your torque requirement and we will select the material.
What tolerances can you hold on insert threads?
Standard CNC threading holds ±0.05mm on thread pitch and form. For precision inserts, we hold ±0.02mm. Helicoil-style coil outer diameter is held to ±0.01mm to ensure press-fit. Thread form compliance to ISO metric or UNC standards is guaranteed. Specify your thread tolerance class and we will meet it.
What is the typical lead time for custom inserts?
Lead time for custom inserts is 5–10 business days depending on complexity. Simple straight-wall inserts: 5–7 days. Complex profiles (key-locking, heat-set variants): 7–10 days. High-volume orders (500+) benefit from design optimization and faster production. Request a quote with your timeline.
Can you manufacture inserts for plastic assemblies?
Yes. Heat-set and ultrasonic inserts are specifically designed for molding into plastic. We supply inserts ready for plastic processors. We also manufacture solid brass inserts for press-fit installation into drilled plastic holes. Specify your plastic type (nylon, polycarbonate, etc.) and molding method, and we will provide the appropriate insert design.
Do you offer insert installation tooling?
Yes. We can supply or recommend installation tooling for Helicoil-style inserts, press-fit inserts, and ultrasonic inserts. We work with tool suppliers to provide installation kits. Consult our engineering team for your specific volume and installation environment.
