Jigs and Fixtures FAQ
What types of jigs and fixtures can you manufacture?
We manufacture custom jigs and fixtures for assembly, welding, inspection, drilling, and CNC operations. Our range includes assembly jigs, welding fixtures, inspection fixtures, CNC fixture plates, modular fixture components, clamping fixtures, drilling jigs, and custom locating fixtures. Each fixture is designed to your application and produced to ISO tolerances.
What materials are best for durable fixtures?
Steel 4140 is the most versatile choice — excellent machinability and moderate hardness for long service life. For maximum wear resistance, tool steels A2, D2, and O1 are used. Stainless steel 17-4 PH is specified when corrosion resistance is required. For rapid prototyping and short-run fixtures, aluminium 7075-T6 reduces weight and cost, though wear life is lower. For aerospace and military applications, titanium is used when weight and strength are critical.
Can you design fixtures for automated assembly?
Yes. We work with your engineering team to design fixtures that interface with your assembly line, robotics, or automated equipment. This includes designing locating features, clamping interfaces, repeatability-critical tolerances, and guides for pick-and-place systems. Our design service ensures your fixture integrates seamlessly with your production process.
What tolerances can you hold on fixture locators?
For critical locating surfaces, we hold ±0.05mm as standard. High-precision locator pins and datum features can be held to ±0.01mm with CMM verification. Repeatable fixtures require tight tolerances on all datum surfaces, and we work with your tolerance stack-up to ensure your finished parts meet your specifications.
What is the typical lead time for custom fixtures?
Simple fixtures (single-setup parts, straightforward geometry) can be delivered in 5–10 business days. Moderately complex fixtures (multi-setup, multiple features) typically take 10–15 business days. Complex tooling (large dies, multi-piece assemblies, heat-treated components) may take 20–25 business days. Express scheduling is available for urgent projects at a small premium.
Do you offer hardening and surface treatment for tooling?
Yes. We arrange heat treatment and hardening as part of the fixture supply — tool steel hardening, carburising, nitriding, and oil quenching are available through our network of specialised suppliers. We also provide surface treatments including polishing, grinding, plating (nickel, chrome, brass), and protective coatings. All treatments are quoted as part of your fixture order, delivered as a complete, finished product.
