Precision Components FAQ
What are precision components and what industries use them?
Precision components are machined or fabricated parts manufactured to tight dimensional tolerances — typically ±0.05mm or better — where dimensional accuracy is critical to function, fit, or safety. Industries that rely on precision components include aerospace (airframe structures, hydraulic fittings), defence (weapon system components, sensor housings), medical devices (implants, surgical instruments, diagnostic equipment), mining (drill heads, wear components, instrumentation), oil and gas (valve bodies, subsea connectors), and rail (brake components, coupling interfaces).
What certifications do your suppliers hold for precision components?
All suppliers in our network hold minimum ISO 9001:2015 certification for quality management systems. Specialised suppliers hold ISO 13485:2016 for medical device manufacturing, AS9100-D for aerospace applications, and ITAR compliance for defence work. We select suppliers based on the specific certification requirements of each order. Supplier audit records and certification documents are available on request.
Can you provide CMM inspection reports with precision components?
Yes. CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) inspection reports are available on request and are standard for critical tolerance work. First Article Inspection (FAI) reports, including ballooned drawings with measurements against every specified dimension, can be provided. For production runs, inspection frequency and sampling plans can be agreed upon to suit your quality plan.
What tolerances can you hold on precision components?
Standard precision machining achieves ±0.05mm on general features. High-precision CNC machining holds ±0.01mm on critical dimensions. Precision grinding achieves ±0.005mm and below. For cylindrical components, roundness to 0.001mm and surface finish to Ra 0.4µm or better are achievable with cylindrical grinding. Specify your critical tolerances on your 2D drawing and we will advise the optimal process.
Do you supply precision components to procurement teams on repeat orders?
Yes. Many of our customers are procurement teams and supply chain managers sourcing precision components on a recurring basis. We maintain supplier qualifications, tooling offsets, and inspection records between orders so repeat orders run smoothly. Blanket purchase orders, scheduled releases, and kanban supply arrangements are all supported.
What materials are most common for precision components?
The most common precision component materials in Australia are aluminium 6061-T6 and 7075-T6 (aerospace, defence, robotics), 316 and 316L stainless steel (marine, medical, food processing), 4140 and 4340 alloy steel (mining, oil and gas, heavy industry), titanium Ti-6Al-4V (aerospace, medical implants), and PEEK engineering plastic (medical, chemical processing). We supply components in all of these materials with full material certification.
How do I get a quote for precision components from engineering drawings?
Upload your STEP file and 2D PDF drawing (with full GD&T callouts, tolerances, surface finish requirements, and material specification) to our quote form. We review every drawing technically before quoting — DFM feedback is included at no charge. Quotes are returned within 2 business days. For complex assemblies or multi-part orders, contact us directly and we will assign an engineer to manage the enquiry.
