PEEK Parts FAQ
What is PEEK and why is it used for precision parts?
PEEK (polyetheretherketone) is a high-performance engineering plastic with exceptional properties: superior biocompatibility (FDA approved for medical implants), chemical resistance, high mechanical strength even at elevated temperatures, excellent dimensional stability, and low outgassing. It machines cleanly to tight tolerances and does not require post-machining surface treatment. PEEK is ideal for medical devices, aerospace, semiconductor, and chemical processing applications where metals are unsuitable.
What are the advantages of PEEK over metals?
PEEK offers multiple advantages: biocompatibility (medical implants), radiolucency (transparent to X-rays and CT scans), chemical inertness (no corrosion), lightweight (1/3 weight of aluminium), low thermal conductivity (excellent insulation), and machinability approaching metals without the tool wear. PEEK components are also non-conductive (excellent for electronics) and require no post-machining finishing. For medical and aerospace applications, PEEK is often the material of choice.
What tolerances can you hold on PEEK parts?
PEEK machines with excellent dimensional stability. Standard CNC machining holds ±0.05mm. Precision PEEK machining achieves ±0.01mm or better. PEEK shrinks minimally after machining (unlike some plastics), making it ideal for critical-tolerance components. All PEEK components can include CMM inspection reports for critical dimensions.
What grades of PEEK do you work with?
We work with all standard PEEK grades: unfilled PEEK (maximum machinability and transparency), carbon-fibre reinforced PEEK (increased strength and stiffness), glass-fibre reinforced PEEK (moderate strength increase), PTFE-filled PEEK (low-friction bearing surfaces), and ESC (electrostatically conductive) grades for electronics. Specify your application requirements and we will recommend the optimal grade.
What is the typical lead time for PEEK parts?
Standard PEEK components: 7–10 business days. Complex multi-feature or precision parts: 10–14 business days. Prototypes and urgent medical/aerospace components: 3–5 business days available. PEEK stock is maintained in-house for most grades, allowing rapid turnaround. Discuss your timeline in your quote request.
Can you manufacture PEEK parts for medical implants?
Yes. Medical-grade PEEK is FDA approved and we have established processes for medical device manufacturing. All components include material certifications, biocompatibility documentation, and full traceability. We work with medical device companies from prototype through production manufacturing.
