Duplex Stainless FAQ

What is duplex stainless steel and why use it?

Duplex stainless steel is a two-phase alloy combining austenitic and ferritic phases, delivering high strength combined with excellent corrosion resistance. Duplex offers 25% higher yield strength than 316L stainless, superior resistance to pitting and stress-corrosion cracking, and excellent fatigue strength. It is the material of choice for high-pressure offshore and marine applications.

What are the advantages of duplex over 316 stainless?

Duplex offers superior yield strength (450 MPa vs 170 MPa for 316L), better pitting resistance in chloride environments (higher PREN), excellent stress-corrosion cracking resistance, and lower cost per unit strength. For high-pressure seawater or sour gas applications, duplex is superior to 316 stainless. Duplex reduces weight by 25% while maintaining or improving corrosion resistance.

What tolerances can you hold on duplex stainless parts?

Duplex is more challenging to machine than 316 stainless due to higher strength and work-hardening characteristics. Standard CNC machining achieves ±0.05mm on general features. High-precision duplex machining achieves ±0.02mm with specialized tools and feed rates. Tight tolerance work requires careful thermal management.

What grades of duplex stainless do you work with?

We supply Duplex 2205 (UNS S31803 — standard duplex, excellent pitting resistance, PREN ~35) and Super Duplex 2507 (UNS S32507 — higher strength and PREN ~42, optimal for extreme seawater). Material certifications (ASTM, NACE) available. Specify environment and we will recommend optimal grade.

What is the typical lead time for duplex stainless parts?

Single-off duplex stainless parts typically require 3–4 weeks due to extended machining times and material sourcing. Stock material availability varies by size and grade. Production runs require extended lead times. Expedited jobs can be arranged — contact our engineers.

Can you manufacture duplex parts for high-pressure applications?

Yes. Duplex stainless is engineered for high-pressure service (to 700 MPa+). We supply duplex parts for pressure vessels, subsea equipment, and high-pressure piping. Material certifications, pressure test documentation, and ASME compliance available. Specify your pressure rating and we will confirm suitability.
