Dies FAQ
What die types can you manufacture components for?
We manufacture custom dies for stamping (blanking, forming, piercing), progressive die segments, forming dies (bending, drawing, deep drawing), punch and die sets, extrusion dies, drawing dies for wire and tube, coining dies, and custom die components. Each die is designed for your specific material and production volume.
What materials are best for high-volume stamping dies?
Tool steel D2 is the industry standard for high-volume stamping dies — exceptional wear resistance and hardness (up to 62 HRC) ensure long production runs without degradation. A2 is used for moderate-volume dies where machinability is important. H13 is specified for hot-forming dies due to thermal fatigue resistance. Carbide dies are used for extreme-volume production (500,000+ parts) and abrasive materials. Stainless steel 17-4 PH is used when corrosion resistance is required.
Can you achieve tight tolerances on die clearances?
Yes. Die clearance is critical to part quality. We hold punch-to-die clearances to ±0.01mm or better, and we work with your part tolerance stack-up to ensure your finished parts are within specification. High-precision machining, grinding, and EDM are used to achieve exact clearance profiles. We provide technical guidance on optimal clearance ranges for your material and thickness.
What is the typical lead time for die components?
Simple die components (single-feature, straightforward geometry) can be delivered in 10–15 business days. Moderate complexity dies (multi-step, multiple clearances) typically take 15–25 business days. Complex progressive dies or hot-forming dies may take 30–45 business days. Lead times depend on material, hardening requirements, and whether EDM is needed.
Do you offer surface coatings for wear resistance?
Yes. Surface coatings extend die life and improve release. We arrange PVD (Titanium Nitride, Chromium Nitride), CVD, nitriding, and chrome plating through our finishing network. Coatings can reduce die wear by 50–80% depending on material and application. All coatings are quoted as part of your die order.
Can you repair or modify existing dies?
Yes. We repair and re-work dies — punch replacement, clearance adjustment, EDM repair of worn areas, and feature modification are all possible. If you have an existing die that needs modification or refurbishment, send it to us for assessment. Many dies can be brought back to production-ready status faster and cheaper than manufacturing new ones.
