Acetal Parts FAQ

What is acetal and why use it for precision parts?

Acetal (polyoxymethylene / POM) is a high-performance engineering plastic with excellent dimensional stability, low creep, and good mechanical properties. It machines to tight tolerances, has low friction characteristics, and is naturally lubricious — reducing need for additional lubrication. Acetal is ideal for gears, bushings, sliding surfaces, and components requiring consistent performance over time.

What are the advantages of acetal over metals?

Acetal offers significant advantages: one-half the weight of metals, self-lubricating properties (low friction, reduced wear), excellent machinability (machines 3–5× faster than steel), non-corrosive in most chemical environments, electrically insulating, and lower cost per part. Acetal eliminates lubrication maintenance on gears and bushings while maintaining tight dimensional tolerances.

What tolerances can you hold on acetal parts?

Acetal machines to excellent tolerances due to its low cutting forces and high dimensional stability. Standard CNC machining achieves ±0.05mm on general features. High-precision acetal machining achieves ±0.01mm. Tight tolerance work with CMM verification can achieve ±0.005mm or better. Acetal has excellent dimensional stability and minimal thermal distortion.

What grades of acetal do you work with?

We supply acetal homopolymer (standard acetal, highest strength, best for gears), acetal copolymer (improved creep resistance, excellent stability), and glass-filled acetal (higher stiffness and strength). Food-contact grades are available for food processing equipment. Specify your application and any regulatory requirements at quote stage.

What is the typical lead time for acetal parts?

Single-off acetal parts typically require 2–3 weeks from quote approval to delivery. Stock material is widely available in rod, tube, and plate. Production runs may allow reduced per-unit cost. Expedited jobs can be arranged — contact our engineers for fast-track options.

Can you manufacture acetal parts for food contact applications?

Yes. We supply food-grade acetal parts with FDA compliance and certifications. Acetal is widely used in food processing equipment — gears, valve components, conveyor parts, and pump housings. Specify food-contact requirement in your quote request and we will source appropriate material and handling.
