How long does a CNC machining quote take in Australia?
Rapid Manufacturing provides CNC machining quotes within 2 business days of receiving your complete file package (3D file + 2D drawing + quantity + material). For simple parts or repeat orders, same-day quotes are often possible. Complex multi-part assemblies or parts requiring special materials may require an additional day. Urgent quoting (same-day or next-day) is available on request — contact us by phone or email to arrange. In all cases, we confirm receipt of your files and the expected quote date when you submit.
What information do I need to provide to get an accurate CNC quote?
For an accurate, binding quote: (1) 3D model — STEP file is strongly preferred for accurate geometric analysis and toolpath planning; (2) 2D drawing — PDF or DWG with all tolerances, surface finish requirements, thread specifications, and material callout; (3) Quantity — how many parts per order (and whether this is a one-off or repeat); (4) Material — specified grade (e.g., 6061-T6 aluminium, 316L stainless steel, Ti-6Al-4V) or your functional requirement (we can suggest materials); (5) Special requirements — heat treatment, surface treatment, certifications (ISO 13485, AS9100), or inspection documentation. Without a 2D drawing, we quote with assumptions and the price may need adjustment once a drawing is provided.
How is CNC machining quoted in Australia?
CNC machining quotes are built from: material cost (bulk weight × material rate, with minimum charge), machining time (estimated from 3D model — setup + roughing + finishing), tooling (standard tools are no charge; special cutters may have a charge), finishing (surface treatment, anodising, plating — quoted separately), inspection (CMM report, FAI — quoted if specified), and margin. Quotes are provided as a firm price for the specified quantity, material, and specification. Changes to specification, material, or quantity require a revised quote. Payment terms: deposit on large orders, payment on delivery or net 30 for approved accounts.
Can I get a quote without a STEP file — only a PDF drawing?
Yes, a 2D PDF drawing alone is sufficient to quote simple prismatic parts with clear dimensions. However: (1) without a 3D model, our estimate of machining time is less accurate, so the quote may include a larger contingency; (2) 3D files allow DFM analysis — we can identify features that are difficult to machine or that drive cost unnecessarily; (3) complex 3D shapes cannot be accurately quoted from 2D drawings. For best results, provide STEP + 2D PDF. If you do not have a STEP file, we can offer to create one from your drawings for a modelling fee.
Is the quote a fixed price or an estimate?
Our quotes are fixed-price for the specified scope: specified material, specified quantity, specified tolerances and finishes. The price is firm once you approve the quote and place the order. Price adjustment may occur if: (1) the material quote from our supplier changes significantly before order placement (we hold material pricing for 14 days), (2) engineering review after order acceptance identifies a material drawing error or omission that changes scope, (3) you request changes after order placement. We do not add charges after manufacture — if we encounter unexpected difficulty, we absorb it or discuss options with you before proceeding.
What is the minimum order quantity and value?
No minimum order quantity. We routinely quote and manufacture single prototype parts. Minimum effective order value is approximately $100–200 AUD for a simple single part — below this, our managed service adds less value than direct purchase. For very simple parts (e.g., a flat bracket cut from aluminium plate), we will advise if a local supplier would be more economical. Our service is best suited to parts requiring precision machining, multiple operations, exotic materials, tight tolerances, or where quality documentation is required.
