Custom CNC Parts FAQ

What is the minimum order quantity for custom CNC parts?

Rapid Manufacturing sources custom CNC parts from 1 piece (one-off) upward. There is no minimum order quantity. Single prototype parts, small batches of 5–50 pieces, and larger production runs are all handled through our supplier network. Setup costs (fixturing, programming) are amortised differently for one-off vs batch work, so per-part cost decreases with quantity — but we never require a minimum order.

What file formats do you accept for custom CNC machining quotes?

We accept 3D CAD files in STEP (.stp, .step) and IGES (.igs, .iges) formats — STEP is preferred as it transfers geometry most reliably between CAD systems. For 2D drawings, we accept PDF, DXF, and DWG. For turned parts and simple prismatic components, a detailed 2D drawing with dimensions and tolerances may be sufficient without a 3D model. If you only have a sketch or a physical sample, contact us — we can often work from these with additional information.

How long does it take to get a quote for custom CNC parts?

Rapid Manufacturing quotes within 2 business days of receiving your files and requirements. For straightforward components (simple geometry, common materials, standard tolerances), quotes are often returned same-day. Complex components requiring multiple operations, unusual materials, or tight tolerance analysis may take the full 2 business days. If you need a faster turnaround or have a deadline, mention it in your quote request and we'll prioritise accordingly.

What materials are available for custom CNC machined parts?

Our supplier network can machine virtually any machinable material. Common materials include: aluminium alloys (6061, 7075, 2024, 5052, 6063), steel (mild steel 1018/1020, medium carbon 1045, alloy steel 4140/4340, tool steel D2/H13), stainless steel (303, 304, 316/316L, 17-4PH, 15-5PH, duplex 2205), titanium (Grade 2 and Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V), copper and brass alloys, plastics (Delrin/Acetal, Nylon PA6/PA66, HDPE, UHMWPE, PEEK, Polycarbonate), and nickel superalloys (Inconel 625/718, Hastelloy). Specify your material in your quote request.

Can you make a part from a physical sample (reverse engineering)?

Yes — we can work from physical samples combined with your measurements or a hand sketch. For precise reverse engineering, we can arrange 3D scanning of your sample to generate a CAD model, from which we then produce the machined part. Alternatively, if you can provide critical dimensions (those that affect fit and function), we can often machine a part that meets your functional requirements without a full scan. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.

What tolerances can you hold on custom CNC parts?

Standard CNC machining tolerance is ±0.1mm for general dimensions without specific tolerance callouts. When dimensions are toleranced on your drawing, our suppliers work to your specified tolerance — commonly ±0.025mm for precision work and ±0.005mm for tight-tolerance features like bearing bores and locating features. Wire EDM can achieve ±0.002mm for ultra-precision profiles. Always specify your required tolerance on your drawing or in your quote request — don't assume a tolerance; state it.

Do you offer repeat orders for custom CNC parts?

Yes. Once a part has been quoted and made, repeat orders are streamlined. Your files, materials, processes, and supplier are already established. Repeat orders are typically faster to quote and produce than first-time work. Many customers use Rapid Manufacturing for initial prototyping and then continue with us for ongoing production runs as their product scales.
