CNC Machining Sydney FAQ

How does Rapid Manufacturing serve Sydney clients?

Rapid Manufacturing operates as a precision manufacturing sourcing partner, not a physical machine shop. Sydney clients submit their 3D files (STEP, IGES) and 2D drawings online and receive a detailed quote within 2 business days. Once approved, we source the components through our network of audited Australian CNC machining suppliers — selecting the most appropriate supplier based on capability, capacity, and location. Finished components are delivered to your Sydney address. Our team manages the entire supply chain, including quality inspection, documentation, and logistics.

What CNC machining services are available for Sydney businesses?

Sydney businesses can access the full range of CNC machining services through Rapid Manufacturing: CNC milling (3-axis, 4-axis, 5-axis), CNC turning and Swiss turning, EDM machining (wire EDM and sinker EDM), CNC grinding (surface, cylindrical, and centreless), gear cutting and spline machining, large-scale boring (horizontal boring mills for large components), sheet metal fabrication, die casting, and injection moulding. Secondary services include anodising, plating, heat treatment, and assembly.

What industries in Sydney use CNC machining?

Sydney's industrial base includes significant demand for precision machined components across: defence and defence contracting (BAE Systems, Thales, Raytheon have significant Sydney operations), aerospace (RAAF bases and MRO operations in the region), mining equipment and maintenance (servicing mines across NSW and QLD), marine and naval (HMAS facilities in Sydney Harbour), medical devices (strong medical technology sector in Sydney), and manufacturing (food processing, packaging, industrial equipment manufacturers). NSW accounts for approximately 30% of Australian manufacturing output.

What lead times can Sydney businesses expect for CNC machined parts?

Standard lead times for Sydney clients: quote within 2 business days from file submission, standard production 7–14 business days from order confirmation, and express production (3–5 business days) available for urgent requirements. Complex components requiring 5-axis machining, EDM, or exotic materials typically require 3–4 weeks. Large components for mining or heavy industrial applications may require 4–6 weeks depending on supplier capacity. Delivery from our supplier network to Sydney addresses is typically 1–3 business days.

What file formats does Rapid Manufacturing accept for quoting?

Rapid Manufacturing accepts STEP (.stp, .step) as the preferred 3D format for all CNC machined components. We also accept IGES (.igs, .iges), Parasolid (.x_t), SOLIDWORKS (.sldprt), CATIA (.catpart), Autodesk Inventor (.ipt), and ACIS (.sat). 2D drawings (PDF, DXF, DWG) should accompany 3D files to specify tolerances, surface finishes, and notes. For sheet metal and laser cutting, DXF is the preferred format. For components without 3D models, 2D drawings alone are accepted — we will model the part and confirm before quoting.

Is there a minimum order quantity for CNC machined parts?

There is no minimum order quantity. Rapid Manufacturing sources single prototype components as readily as production runs of hundreds or thousands. One-off replacement parts for mining or industrial equipment, prototype components for product development, and low-volume production runs of 5–50 pieces are all within scope. For very low volumes (1–3 pieces), setup costs are amortised over fewer parts, so per-unit pricing is higher — this is standard across the industry. For repeat orders, tooling and setup costs are reduced from the second order onwards.

Does Rapid Manufacturing have ISO 9001 certification?

Rapid Manufacturing operates under an ISO 9001:2015 certified quality management system. Our supplier network is audited and selected based on quality certifications, capability, and track record. For aerospace and defence components, we work with AS9100-certified suppliers. For medical components, ISO 13485-aware suppliers are selected. All components are subject to dimensional inspection before dispatch, and material certificates are provided with orders where specified.
